A Japanese single malt bottling from Nikka's flagship distillery in Hokkaido. Nikka was founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru, a former Suntory employee who had studied at the University of Glasgow, and later trained as a blender at the now lost Hazelburn distillery in Campbeltown. Taketsuru opened the Yoichi distillery in the same year as establishing the company, modelling its pot stills on the long-necked design of the Longmorn stills in Speyside.
The unforeseen popularity of Japanese whisky meant that Nikka were understocked for their popular core range in 2015, discontinuing all of their age-statements as a result. This is now the sole core range product, but no less well-regarded.
Nose: a light but nicely aromatic nose, with some apple cake, floral honey and lots of vanilla custard. Hints of tinned pineapple and bananas. Hints of jawbreakers. Sweet and malty, in a nice way.
Mouth: still this sweet (bourbonny) profile, with lots of vanilla, malt and sweetened tea. It gets quite oaky, with some rough edges and a faint soapy touch. Then something vaguely peaty and vaguely metallic. Some leather.
Finish: not too long, grainy and slightly bitter.
Bottle Size: 500ml
Alc: 43%
