This distinctive expression of Deanston was distilled in 2008 and fully matured in casks that had previously held Bordeaux red wine. In 2017 it was bottled at cask strength, non-chill filtered, with only 1,400 bottles produced. The marriage of Highland single malt and red wine cask influence results in a bold, fruit-driven dram with structural tannins and oak interplay.
Tasting Notes
Colour: Deep amber with ruby and garnet reflections.
Nose: Raspberry, dark cherry, and cassis dominate. Below the fruit lies a layer of honeyed malt, muscovado sugar, subtle vanilla, and oak spice—with citrus oils and a whisper of red wine acidity.
Palate: Firm and punchy. A combination of blackberries, strawberry compote, and stewed red fruit gives way to nutmeg, clove, and black pepper. The wine cask yields tannic structure, balancing the sweetness. With water: dark chocolate, licorice, stem ginger, and hints of tobacco emerge.
Finish: Long, dry, and spiced. The tannins stay forward, along with earth, clove, and tobacco leaf notes lingering after the fruit recedes.
