Overview
The Savage Girl Next Door 2025 is one of the rarest and most highly regarded wines produced by acclaimed South African winemaker Duncan Savage. Made from 100% Syrah, Girl Next Door is sourced from tiny vineyard parcels on the Cape Peninsula, where the vines are exposed to the cooling influence of the Atlantic Ocean.
The wine has become something of a cult South African Syrah. Its identity is built around maritime freshness rather than power: perfume, pepper, dark berries and savoury complexity are accompanied by the distinctive saline character that has become a hallmark of Girl Next Door. Broadbent describes it as one of South Africa's finest examples of Syrah and notes its very limited production.
The newly released 2025 vintage continues this highly restrained style. Rather than producing a rich, heavily extracted Shiraz, Duncan Savage focuses on freshness, moderate alcohol, whole-bunch complexity and minimal oak influence.
Tasting Notes
Colour: Deep ruby with vibrant purple and crimson highlights.
Nose: Beautifully perfumed and complex, with violets, rose petals, blackberry and dark cherry accompanied by cracked black pepper and fresh herbs. Savoury notes of black olive, cured meat and subtle spice emerge with air, alongside the distinctive sea-spray character associated with the coastal vineyards.
Palate: Medium-bodied, energetic and wonderfully precise. Dark berry and plum fruit is framed by fine tannins and vibrant acidity, while black pepper, herbs and subtle savoury spice add complexity. The wine has impressive concentration without heaviness, with the maritime influence providing a characteristic salty freshness.
Finish: Long, savoury and beautifully focused, with lingering dark fruit, pepper, violets and a distinctly saline mineral character.

Vineyard & Winemaking
Girl Next Door has an unusual story. The wine originally came from an extraordinarily small 0.38-hectare Syrah vineyard near Fish Hoek, planted on sandy gravel soils and exposed to the harsh coastal environment. Despite its unlikely location, the site proved capable of producing exceptional Syrah.
More recent vintages incorporate fruit from two small Cape Peninsula sites around Fish Hoek and Noordhoek, both heavily influenced by the cold Atlantic Ocean.
Duncan Savage deliberately keeps the winemaking restrained. The preceding 2024 vintage used 50% whole bunches, spent approximately two weeks on skins and was matured for ten months in large-format foudre. Production was only 2,872 bottles.
The objective is to preserve the wine's extraordinary perfume and maritime character rather than mask it with extraction or new oak.
Cellaring Potential
Despite its perfume and elegance, Girl Next Door is a serious ageing wine. The 2024 was given drinking windows extending as far as 2045 by Vinous and 2040 by Wine Spectator.
The 2025 should therefore be approached as a fine wine rather than simply a light, immediately drinkable Syrah. Enjoying it young will emphasise fruit, flowers and pepper, while bottle age should gradually introduce more savoury, earthy and meaty complexity.
Food Pairing
Serve at around 15–17°C and consider decanting for 30–60 minutes when young.
Excellent with lamb, venison, duck, beef fillet, charcuterie, mushroom dishes and braaied meats. The combination of pepper, savoury complexity and acidity also makes it particularly good with rosemary, thyme and smoky flavours.
Buyer's & Collector's Note
Savage Girl Next Door is one of South Africa's cult Syrahs. Production is tiny, the vineyard sources are unusual, and its combination of Atlantic influence and restrained winemaking gives it a character quite unlike the richer Syrah styles found elsewhere in the Cape. Broadbent describes the wine as lithe, peppery and elegant, with rose petal, black cherry, herbs and spice.
Its scarcity is also genuine rather than simply a marketing story. Recent production has been fewer than 3,000 bottles, while some early vintages were produced in quantities of only around 500–1,000 bottles.
With the 2024 receiving 95–96 point scores from several major critics, the newly released Girl Next Door 2025 is one of the Savage wines I would particularly highlight to collectors. It belongs in the same conversation as Porseleinberg, Rall AVA Syrah, Van Loggerenberg Graft and Mullineux's single-terroir Syrahs as an example of the very top end of modern South African Syrah.

On rare occasions, a courier may generate an incorrect delivery rate due to issues with the address recognition. In such cases, we will arrange for an alternative courier to deliver your order at a similar rate to the original cost.
We believe in offering transparency in our delivery fees and, as such, do not include any delivery costs in our product pricing. We do not profit from delivery fees.
Third-Party Couriers:
For the majority of our orders, we rely on third-party courier services for delivery. Regular notifications will be sent and on the day of delivery the couriers will notify you via sms, call or email . If the courier is unable to reach you, we will get in touch with you to arrange an alternative solution.
