Old-Vine Chenin Blanc | 1956 Vineyard | Duncan Savage

The Savage Never Been Asked to Dance 2025 is a serious old-vine Chenin Blanc from Duncan Savage, produced from a tiny vineyard planted in 1956 on granitic soils near the border of Paarl and Stellenbosch. The vineyard was once earmarked for removal before Savage stepped in and gave the fruit a chance to stand on its own. Considering what the vineyard produces today, pulling it out would have been a rather spectacular own goal.

This is 100% Chenin Blanc, but don't expect a simple, fruit-forward Steen. Never Been Asked to Dance is made in a much more serious, restrained style, with old-vine concentration, barrel fermentation and maturation bringing texture and depth while the granite soils and naturally bright acidity keep everything wonderfully tight.

The result is classic Duncan Savage: stone fruit, citrus, subtle honeyed richness, texture and a long saline-mineral finish. It has enough immediate charm to tempt you now, but enough structure to make opening it too early feel mildly irresponsible.

Tasting Notes

Colour: Bright straw-gold with subtle green highlights.

Nose: Layered and quietly expressive, with yellow peach, nectarine, citrus peel and bruised apple joined by hints of dried honey, chamomile and delicate floral notes. Give it some time in the glass and more savoury, mineral and lightly waxy characteristics begin to emerge. Recent vintages have shown this combination of yellow fruit, honey, flowers and restrained lees complexity particularly well.

Palate: Textured but beautifully controlled. Ripe stone fruit and citrus sit over a creamy, lees-influenced mid-palate, balanced by vibrant acidity and a firm mineral backbone. There's richness here, but Duncan Savage clearly didn't get the memo that serious Chenin needs to be fat and buttery.

Finish:Long, dry and precise, with citrus peel, stone fruit and a lovely saline, almost stony

finish that keeps pulling you back to the glass.

The Vineyard

The vineyard is the real star here.

These Chenin Blanc vines were planted in 1956, making them roughly 69 years old at the time of the 2025 harvest. The tiny bush-vine site sits on granitic soils around the Paarl/Stellenbosch border and is part of the extraordinary collection of old vineyards that has helped redefine premium South African Chenin Blanc.

The block had historically disappeared into larger blends and at one point was apparently destined to be uprooted. Duncan Savage saw something worth saving and began bottling the vineyard separately as Never Been Asked to Dance.

A slightly tragic name for a wine that now has plenty of admirers lining up.

Winemaking

Savage's approach is deliberately restrained, allowing the old vineyard rather than the cellar to do most of the talking.

Recent vintages have been fermented and matured in seasoned Stockinger oak, with full malolactic fermentation adding texture while avoiding obvious new-oak flavours. Tim Atkin described the 2023 as a particularly Burgundian interpretation of Chenin Blanc, highlighting its creamy lees character, subtle wood and precise mineral finish.

The 2024 continued the theme, with critics noting yellow fruit, dried honey, chamomile, ginger and a taut, highly textured palate.

It's Chenin Blanc wearing a very nice suit, basically.

Cellaring Potential

This is absolutely not a "drink it before next summer" Chenin.

The combination of old vines, acidity, concentration and restrained oak gives Never Been Asked to Dance excellent ageing potential. Tim Atkin suggested a drinking window extending to 2033 for the 2023, while Neal Martin gave the 2022 a window extending to 2040.

The 2025 should be gorgeous young if given some air, but several years in the cellar should bring out more wax, honey, nuts and savoury complexity.

Food Pairing

Serve at around 10–12°C in a decent-sized white wine glass. Please don't serve a wine like this ice-cold. It didn't survive nearly 70 years in a vineyard to taste like cold water.

Excellent with grilled line fish, prawns, roast chicken, pork belly, creamy seafood, Cape Malay curries and mature cheeses. The acidity and texture also make it superb with richer dishes that would overwhelm a lighter white.

Buyer's & Collector's Note

Savage Never Been Asked to Dance is exactly the sort of wine that explains why old-vine South African Chenin has become so exciting internationally.

You have 1956 bush vines, granite soils, tiny production, restrained winemaking and one of South Africa's best contemporary winemakers. And unlike some fine wines, there's an actual vineyard story behind the scarcity rather than somebody in marketing deciding that 12,000 bottles constitutes a "rare release."

Recent vintages scoring 94–96 points show just how consistently good this vineyard has become. The newly released 2025 is therefore one I'd happily point serious Chenin collectors towards, particularly customers who already buy wines from Sadie Family, Alheit, Rall or Van Loggerenberg.

And yes, despite the name, we'd definitely ask this one to dance.
